The Ring Type Joint Flanges (RTJ) are primarily applicable in high pressure or high-temperature settings (above 427°C). These flanges have grooves cut into their faces, which steel ring gaskets. The bolts, if tightened, get compressed with the gasket between these flanges seal into the slots or Coining the gasket. This makes intimate contact inside the grooves, creating a metal-to-metal seal. RTJ flange is designed with raised face with a ring groove machined into it (the raised face does not serve any part of the sealing). Although these RTJ flanges get sealed with ring gaskets, the raised faces of the connected and tightened flanges may contact each other. The compressed gasket will not bear extra load beyond the bolt tension and vibration. Thus, movement cannot further crush the gasket and lessen the connecting stress.

Other Flange Products:
An RTJ flange, or ring-type joint, is a type of pipe flange that joins two pipes together to form a seal. It is most commonly used for high-pressure and high temperature applications such as pumps and valves. It has two faces, one round and one flat, that contain raised metal rings which create the seal when pressed against each other. RTJ flanges are highly durable and resistant to rust, making them ideal for use in water or other corrosive environments. Furthermore, they can easily be manufactured from any number of materials including bronze, copper, stainless steel and more. All in all, an RTJ flange is a robust yet flexible solution when it comes to keeping connected pipes tightly sealed.
RTJ (Ring Type Joint) flange and RF (Raised Face) flange are two types of pipe flanges that are commonly used in piping systems. The main difference between RTJ and RF flanges is the type of seal they provide. An RTJ flange has a profiled seal groove on the inside and outside raised radius ring, which creates an elastomeric o-ring seal when the two components are connected. In contrast, an RF flange utilizes a flat gasket as a seal that is sandwiched between the two faces with bolts or studs. RTJ uses much higher pressure capabilities than RF, but also requires more specialized or expensive piping components to complete the joint. Additionally, RTJ flanges require frequent calibration and therefore regular maintenance when compared to RF flanges. With both types of standard production sizes and custom designs available, it is important for engineers to properly evaluate an application and pick the right type for their needs.
Ring Type Joint Flanges (RTJs) come in a variety of sizes, with the most common being Class 150, Class 300, Class 600 and Class 900. Each size has its own unique dimensions, which are specified by the American National Standard Pipe Threads (NPT). Depending on the size, RTJ flanges may have either a raised face or a flat face. Generally speaking, a 4-inch RTJ flange will measure 5 to 6 inches across the bolt circle and 4 inches from the inner bore to outside diameter. The thickness of an RTJ flange also depends upon its size; for instance, a 4-inch RTJ flange can range from 0.75 to 1 inch thick. Not only can Ring Type Joint Flanges be used in moderate temperature services such as water and chemical piping systems, but they are also suited for higher temperature services like natural gas lines and refining pipeline applications.
